Embarking from Moshi, a brief 45-minute drive transports you to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate, passing through the charming Village of Machame. As we await the issuance of permits, take in the lively atmosphere as numerous crews gear up for the upcoming journey. Delight in the enchanting rainforest scenery and winding trails while your guide shares insights into the local flora, fauna, and natural wildlife. In these lower elevations, expect muddy and slippery conditions on the trail, making gaiters and trekking poles highly recommended for a secure and enjoyable trek.
MANDARA HUTS – HOROMBO HUTS: 11 KM/3-MI | 6-8HRS | MOORELAND
Altitude: 2740m/9000ft to 3690m/12,100ft
Following a restful night’s sleep and a satisfying breakfast, we leave the rainforest behind and progress along an ascending path through heathland, keeping an eye out for giant lobelias and groundsels. The journey leads us into open moorlands, characterized by small shrubs as the predominant vegetation. Take a midday break for lunch, relishing breathtaking views of Mawenzi. Late afternoon brings us to the Horombo Huts, situated beneath the awe-inspiring Kibo Summit viewpoint. As the day progresses, temperatures begin to decrease, setting the stage for the next phase of our ascent.
HOROMBO HUTS- KIBO HUTS: 10 KM/6MI | 6-8HRS | SEMI-DESERT
Altitude: 3690m/12,100ft to 4695m/15,400ft
Following breakfast, the journey persists through the diminishing heathland, transforming into a moonscape as you enter the expansive saddle linking Mawenzi and Kibo. During the lunch break and as you traverse this remarkably vast saddle, take the opportunity to scrutinize the upcoming summit climb up Kibo, which awaits you in just a few hours.
KIBO HUTS – SUMMIT: 4KM /2.5 MI UP | 5-7HRS | – HOROMBO HUTS: 14KM /9MI DOWN | 5-6HRS | GLACIERS, SNOW CAPPED SUMMIT
Altitude: 4695m/15,400ft to 5895m/19,340ft
Descent to 3690m/12,100ft
Anticipation builds as the morning arrives, signaling an early start between midnight and 2 a.m. This marks the most mentally and physically demanding segment of the trek.
Navigating in a switchback pattern, we press on toward the summit, focusing on staying warm and embracing the incredible sense of accomplishment awaiting us. Ascending through challenging scree and possible snow, we make our way to Gillman’s Point on the crater rim. A short rest here rewards us with a breathtaking sunrise, while faster hikers may witness it from the summit. The remaining one-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak is likely to involve snowy terrain.
Congratulations! With each step, you’ve now reached Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire continent of Africa!
After capturing photos, celebrating, and perhaps shedding a few tears of joy, take a moment to relish this incredible achievement. Begin the steep descent to Mweka Camp, pausing at Barafu for lunch and a brief rest. Gaiters and trekking poles are highly recommended for navigating the challenging loose gravel and volcano ash terrain. A well-deserved rest awaits you as you enjoy your final evening on the mountain. Overnight at Mweka Camp.
HOROMBO HUTS – MARANGU GATE – MOSHI: 18KM/11MI |6-7HRS | RAINFOREST
Altitude: 3690m/12,100 to 1830m/6000ft
Following breakfast and a heartfelt ceremony of appreciation and team bonding with your crew, it’s time to bid farewell. The descent continues, with a stop at the Mandara Huts for lunch. Don’t forget to tip your guides, cooks, and porters, as this is where you part ways with them. Returning to the Marangu Park Gate, you’ll receive your well-earned summit certificates. The weather is noticeably warmer, and the terrain is wet, muddy, and steep, so we highly recommend gaiters and trekking poles. A vehicle will meet you at the gate to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Enjoy a long-overdue hot shower, dinner, and celebrations!
Overnight at Tulia Hotel on a bed and breakfast basis before being transferred to your journey home, safari, or a relaxing trip to Zanzibar.
