Day 1

Arusha – Momella Gate 1500 m –Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m)

Duration: Approx. 5 – 7 hours of hiking.
Vegetation Type: Forest.

Embark on your Mount Meru adventure after a leisurely breakfast at your lodge/hotel in Arusha. A scenic drive takes you to the Arusha National Park’s first gate for registration before proceeding to the Momella Gate, the starting point of your trek. While you and your guide finalize park formalities at the Tanzania National Park (TANAPA) office, porters and cooks will efficiently organize, pack, and weigh the necessities for the journey. A packed lunch at the gate precedes the start of your climb.

Commence the ascent of Mt. Meru, with the first day reminiscent of a leisurely walking safari. Anticipate wildlife encounters, including giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and buffaloes. For your safety, an armed ranger, arranged through TANAPA, accompanies the group. Pass by the Ngarenanyuki River, and if opting for the shortcut, marvel at a beautiful waterfall at the foot of Mt. Meru. As the late afternoon sun casts a warm glow, you’ll reach Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m). Your chef will brew coffee or tea and provide hot water for washing. Relax and savor the breathtaking sunset while awaiting a delicious dinner.

Day 2

Miriakamba Hut 2,500 m – Saddle Hut 3,500 m

Duration: 3 – 5 hours of hiking.
Vegetation Type: Forest Zone.

Rise and shine to a hearty breakfast before embarking on the next leg of your Mount Meru climb. The day’s journey begins with a steep ascent through the enchanting forest zone, where diverse wildlife may grace your path. Revel in the trail’s beauty, offering captivating views of Mt. Meru Crater and the Ash Tray.

As you progress, you’ll reach Saddle Hut, situated in the alpine desert zone, just in time for a well-deserved lunch. After a satisfying meal and some rest, the option to climb Little Meru (3,820 m) is presented. This side trek promises a spectacular view of the surrounding Mount Meru area and aids in acclimatization.

Later in the day, an early dinner is served to ensure ample rest before the exhilarating midnight summit attempt. Settle in for a good night’s sleep around 19:00 hrs.

Day 3

Saddle Hut (3,500 m) – Meru Summit Socialist Peak (4,566 m) – Miriakamba (2,500 m)

Duration Approx: 10-12 hours of hiking.
Vegetation Type: Alpine desert.

A day of great significance awaits as you prepare for the summit attempt on Mount Meru. The wake-up call is set for 00:30 hours, and a comforting serving of tea and biscuits precedes the commencement of your summit endeavor at around 01:30 hrs.

The climb unfolds with determination, ascending the steep grade trail to Rhino Point (3,800 m) and then onward to Cobra Point (4,350 m). Traverse a rocky ridge nestled between the Crater and the inner cliffs of Mount Meru, each step bringing you closer to the summit. In the early morning light, you’ll reach the pinnacle at 4,566 m, just in time to witness a breathtaking sunrise from the East.

Marvel at the clarity of Kilimanjaro and the dramatic descent of the Crater cliffs, dropping intensely at nearly 1000 feet or more. Spend precious moments absorbing the grandeur of your achievement before starting the descent.

After descending to Saddle Hut, enjoy a leisurely brunch and then continue your descent to Miriakamba Hut for dinner and a well-deserved overnight rest.

Day 4

Miriakamba – Momella gate – Arusha

Duration: 2-3 hours of hiking.
Vegetation Type: Forest.

As your Mount Meru climbing adventure nears its conclusion, savor a restful morning and a leisurely breakfast. The descent begins towards Momella gate, winding through the lush forest where wildlife sightings are still a possibility. If you opted for the long route on the first day, your descent will lead you via Tululunsi waterfalls.

Upon reaching the gate, your awaiting driver will be ready to transfer you back to Arusha. Take this opportunity to bid farewell and express your gratitude through tipping to your dedicated crew. Drive back to Arusha, reflecting on the remarkable journey you’ve experienced on Mount Meru.
