3 Days Mt Meru Trekking Itinerary

Day 1

Arusha – Momella Gate 1500 m – Miriakamba Hut 2500

Embark on an exhilarating 3-day Mount Meru trekking adventure, with the first leg spanning approximately 5-7 hours of hiking through lush forest terrain. The journey begins after a satisfying breakfast at your lodge (1400 m), followed by a 30-minute drive to Ngongongare gate via Usa River town. Your guide will efficiently handle all necessary paperwork before proceeding to Arusha National Park, where brief stops for wildlife spotting add an element of excitement. The tour then arrives at Momella gate, where final checks on porters and luggage ensure a seamless start to the Mt. Meru trek.

The initial day of the trek unfolds at a leisurely polepole pace, akin to a walking safari. Keep an eye out for captivating animal species such as reticulated giraffes, zebras, waterbucks, and buffaloes. As the hike takes place within the park, an armed TANAPA ranger will accompany the group throughout, ensuring a safe and enriching experience. The route may vary in length depending on the starting time, with the option to choose between long and short routes.

While navigating the trail, you’ll encounter Ngarenanyuki River and a picturesque waterfall at the base of Mount Meru. Miriakamba Hut (2500 m) serves as the evening’s destination, and with good timing, you’ll arrive before sunset. Your porters and chef will have prepared the camp, offering coffee or tea and hot water for washing. Day 2

Miriakamba Hut 2,500 m – Saddle Hut 3,500 m

Embark on the second leg of your 3-day Mount Meru trekking adventure, encompassing a duration of 4-5 hours of invigorating hiking through the enchanting Forest Zone. Following a hearty breakfast, commence your journey along a steep path, surrounded by the diverse flora and fauna of the forest. Keep an eye out for various birds and animals that may cross your path. Along this scenic route, catch breathtaking glimpses of Mount Meru Crater and the Ash Tray, adding to the awe-inspiring experience.

Continue your ascent to the alpine desert zone, where the Saddle Hut awaits. This marks the ideal spot for a well-deserved hot lunch, contingent upon the pace of your trek. Take advantage of the break to rejuvenate and refuel for the challenges ahead.

Post-lunch, consider an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820 m). Day 3

Saddle Hut 3500 m – Meru Summit Socialist Peak 4,566 m – Miriakamba 2,500 m

Prepare for the exhilarating climax of your 3-day Mount Meru trekking adventure with a challenging ascent that spans approximately 9-12 hours. In the Alpine desert, this final leg promises stunning vistas and a sense of accomplishment.

Set your alarm for 00:30, rousing to a comforting cup of tea and biscuits before commencing the ultimate push towards the summit at 01:30 hrs. The day’s journey begins with a steep ascent to Rhino Point (3800 m) and progresses to Cobra Point (4,350 m). Traverse a rocky ridge nestled between the Crater and the inner cliffs of Mount Meru, experiencing the sheer beauty of the surroundings. The final destination is the summit, reached during the first rays of sun from the East, standing proudly at 4,566 m. On clear days, marvel at the breathtaking sight of Kilimanjaro Mountain and the dramatic cliffs of the crater dropping intensely, creating a memorable panorama.

Take the time to capture the beauty with photographs before descending to Saddle Hut for some well-deserved rest. Continue the descent to Miriakamba Hut and finally to Momella gate for the check-out process.

Awaiting you is transportation back to Arusha or to the airport, especially for those flying with KLM around 21:45 hours. Successful summit climbers will be presented with a certificate for the Meru trekking achievement at 4,566 m. Participants in the acclimatization hike at Little Meru will also receive a well-deserved certificate.
