Day 1

Arusha to Ngorongoro Crater

Embark on a mesmerizing journey from Arusha town to the iconic Ngorongoro Crater. The day unfolds with immersive game viewing on the expansive Ngorongoro Crater floor. This natural wonder boasts the title of the largest intact caldera globally, resembling a colossal cooking pot with an area of 259 square kilometers (100 square miles) and towering walls reaching 600 meters (1970 feet).

Originally towering as high as Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro Crater now captivates with its diverse ecosystem and stunning landscapes. The crater is home to an impressive population of approximately 30,000 to 40,000 birds and animals, including the striking pink flamingos and the elusive black rhino.

At the heart of the crater lies the salt-water lake known as ‘Makat’ or ‘Magadi,’ while the eastern side features the Ngoitokitok Spring. Revered as the ‘Garden of Eden,’ Ngorongoro Crater enchants visitors with its natural beauty, creating a paradise for the resident wildlife. Averaging around 450,000 annual visitors, the crater requires guides and permits for exploration.

Day 2

Olmoti Crater

Following breakfast, your driver guide will transport you to Nainokanoka Maasai village, where you’ll rendezvous with your Maasai guide at the base of Olmoti Crater. Embark on a captivating hike leading to Empakai Crater, a journey spanning 4-6 hours. Upon reaching Empakai, indulge in leisurely exploration along the crater rim. To minimize environmental impact on the crater floor ecosystem, your camping experience is strategically situated on the crater rim.

Please note that additional days can be seamlessly incorporated here for an extended exploration of Olmoti Crater. Serving as the primary water source for Ngorongoro Crater, Olmoti Crater teems with wildlife, diverse bird species, and the enchanting Munge Waterfalls. Opt for an extra day of camping at a Maasai boma (compound) to delve deeper into the cultural and natural wonders of this unique landscape.

Day 3

Empakii Crater – Arusha

Dedicate the morning to an immersive exploration of the Empakai Crater floor, accompanied by a delightful picnic lunch. The crater’s lake serves as a prominent habitat for flamingos, while the surrounding forest is a haven for various bird species. Buffalo and hyena roam the plains, and the early morning presents a favorable opportunity to spot a elusive leopard.

As the afternoon unfolds, embark on a scenic descent back to Arusha, where you’ll indulge in a satisfying dinner and settle in for an overnight stay. Reflect on the day’s adventures and relish the memories created amidst the captivating landscapes of Empakai Crater.
