Day 1

Longido Village Exploration

Following a satisfying breakfast, embark on a journey to Longido to delve into the vibrant Maasai Culture. Connect with the local elders and warriors during a concise village tour, where they will provide insights into the daily life within their traditional homes known as Bomas, crafted from mud and cow dung. Experience the morning rituals as women venture out of the Bomas to fetch water and gather firewood. Observe the lively scenes of young children playing and engaging in the early responsibilities of caring for goats, cows, and lambs. Later, settle into your accommodation, a basic guesthouse nestled within the heart of the village. The journey from Arusha takes approximately 2-3 hours.

Day 2

Walking and Village Activities

Start your day with a delicious breakfast at the Camp or Guesthouse before embarking on a full-day walking expedition through the Maasai Land. Witness the captivating scenes of women leaving their Bomas to fetch water and gather firewood, while young children play around mud houses, showcasing their early responsibilities of caring for kids and lambs.

As you explore the area, be enchanted by the abundance of colorful birds, including the starling major, the red and yellow barbet, the masked weaver, the silverbill, and the majestic secretary bird. Longido is renowned for hosting rare mammals not commonly found in national parks. The plains and slopes of the mountain serve as a sanctuary for unique species such as the gerenuk, lesser kudu, and klipspringer. Other fascinating wildlife in the vicinity includes giraffes, zebras, gazelles, buffaloes, mongoose, and silver jackals.

Set up camp and spend the night in Longido, surrounded by the natural beauty and diverse wildlife of the region.

Day 3

Longido Ascent and Return to Arusha

Embark on another early morning adventure with a short drive to the road head near Kimokouwa, where peaceful Maasai Bomas dot the green “valley of wells.” Begin the ascent of Longido (2629 meters), guided by Maasai warriors armed with knives and spears. Setting out from Kimokouwa, navigate narrow footpaths through a dense natural forest.

After two and a half hours, reach the breathtaking “dawa ya supu” (soup-medicine) viewpoint, offering a marvelous vantage point. Follow trails created by buffaloes to conquer the summit in an additional two hours of climbing. The Maasai warriors use loud cries to warn buffaloes of your presence, preventing any potential encounters. The panoramic views from the summit are simply awe-inspiring, stretching over 200 kilometers on clear days, encompassing all the mountains of Northern Tanzania.

The descent from the steep mountain presents its own challenge. In the late evening, return to Arusha for a well-deserved shower, followed by dinner and an overnight stay at the hotel. Reflect on the unforgettable experiences gained during your exploration of Longido’s cultural and natural wonders.
