Crossing a petite valley, we traverse a steep rocky ridge adorned with heather, leading to the ridge’s culmination. The journey then takes a westward turn, guiding us along a river gorge before reaching the Shira campsite for an overnight stay.

Meals: Savor nourishing meals at each stage of the day – Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

Day 3

Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

  • Elevation (m): From 3,840m to 4,630m to 3,950m
  • Elevation (ft): From 12,600ft to 15,190ft to 12,960ft
  • Distance: 15 km
  • Walking Time: 5-7 hours
  • Habitat: Semi-desert

Following a satisfying breakfast, embark on an ascent along a steepening path, leaving behind the lush vegetation and approaching the imposing mass of Kilimanjaro. After several hours, traverse a rocky landscape to reach the distinctive Lava Tower, also known as the “Shark’s Tooth,” standing at 4,630m/15,190ft. This rugged remnant of Kilimanjaro’s volcanic history towers several hundred feet high, and the trail passes directly below it. Adventurous souls can scramble to the tower’s summit for an extra thrill.

Following a lunch break near Lava Tower, descend for 2 hours beneath the lower cliffs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall, eventually arriving at Barranco Camp situated at 3,950m/12,960ft. This section of the hike offers numerous photo opportunities, especially if the walls are adorned with ice. Barranco Camp, nestled in a valley beneath the Breach and Great Barranco Walls, promises a memorable sunset as you await dinner. Pay close attention to any signs of altitude sickness on this crucial day. Despite ending at a similar elevation as the start, this leg is vital for acclimatization, preparing your body for the ultimate summit day.

Day 4

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

  • Elevation (m): From 3,950m to 4,200m
  • Elevation (ft): From 12,600ft to 13,800ft
  • Distance: 7 km
  • Hiking Time: 4 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Following a nourishing breakfast, we bid farewell to Barranco Camp and progress along a steep ridge, navigating past the imposing Barranco Wall. Our trail leads us to the Karanga Valley campsite, situated at 4,200m/13,800ft. This leg of the journey spans 7 km and takes approximately 4 hours. The Karanga Camp offers a vital water source, preparing you for the subsequent days. On Day 5, you’ll further trek from the Karanga Valley Camp to the Barafu Camp, setting the stage for the summit on Day 6, with the descent culminating on Day 7.

Day 5

Karanga to Barafu Camp

  • Elevation (m): From 3,950m to 4,550m
  • Elevation (ft): From 12,960ft to 14,930ft
  • Distance: 13 km
  • Hiking Time: 8 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Awakening from a night under the formidable Great Barranco Wall, your journey unfolds as you conquer this impressive obstacle, revealing its deceptive ease. Reaching just below the Heim Glacier, you’re treated to a breathtaking perspective, truly appreciating Kilimanjaro’s beauty. Descend through the Karanga Valley, traversing ridges and valleys to connect with the Mweka Route, your designated descent path. The South Circuit, completed at this stage, provides diverse summit views from multiple angles.

However, the focus remains on the summit. Turn left and ascend the ridge for another hour to reach Barafu Hut, situated at 4,550m/14,930ft. The last water source on the route is in the Karanga Valley; Barafu Camp, despite its Swahili translation meaning “ice,” lacks water. Your tent will be perched on a narrow, stony, wind-swept ridge, emphasizing the need to familiarize yourself with the terrain before nightfall. Prepare your gear and cold-weather attire for the impending summit climb, including fresh headlamp and camera batteries. To prevent freezing, consider storing water in a thermal flask. Retire early by 7 PM, aiming to secure a few crucial hours of rest before the summit ascent.

Day 6

Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut

  • Elevation (ft): From 15,300ft to 19,345ft (and down to 10,000ft)
  • Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent
  • Climbing Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent
  • Habitat: Arctic

In the early hours (midnight to 2 am), the journey to the summit resumes, navigating between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. Head in a northwesterly direction, ascending through challenging scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim—an intensely demanding section of the trek. Upon reaching Stella Point (18,600 ft), a brief rest is well-deserved, and you’ll witness a breathtaking sunrise, weather permitting. Continuing from Stella Point, encounter snow on the 1-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire continent of Africa. Swift hikers may witness the sunrise from the summit.

Descending straight from the summit, the trail leads to the Mweka Hut campsite, with a stop at Barafu for lunch. Gaiters and trekking poles become essential for the loose gravel descent. Nestled in the upper forest, Mweka Camp may experience mist or rain in the late afternoon. As night falls, relish the final dinner on the mountain before a well-earned rest.

Meals: A hearty combination of Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner awaits.

Day 7

Mweka Camp to Arusha

  • Elevation (ft): From 10,000ft to 5,400ft
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Climbing Time: 3-4 hours
  • Habitat: Rain Forest

Following a nourishing breakfast, the descent unfolds as we make our way down to the Mweka Park Gate to collect your well-earned certificates. At the gate, a vehicle awaits to transport you back to your hotel in Arusha, marking the triumphant conclusion of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
