Embark on your journey as we pick you up from Kilimanjaro airport and transport you to a comfortable hotel in Moshi for an overnight stay, where you’ll be introduced to the majestic mountain. The trek kicks off on day one with a 5-hour expedition through the enchanting rainforest at Kilimanjaro’s base, leading to the Machame Camp. Progressing on the second day, traverse through increasingly sparse vegetation into moorlands, culminating at Shira Camp. Day three’s trek aids acclimatization, ascending to the Lava Tower (15,000 feet / 4600m) before descending to the Barranco Valley campsite. On the fourth day, conquer the Barranco Wall, featuring non-technical scrambling en route to the high camp at Barafu. The summit push commences at 11 pm, culminating in a slow and chilly 6-hour climb to the crater rim, followed by an hour’s traverse to Uhuru Peak, the ultimate summit.
Following the climb, the safari leg begins the morning after, providing ample time to rejuvenate at the Moshi hotel. The 5-day safari spans three of Tanzania’s premier National Parks. Start with Tarangire National Park, renowned for its majestic Baobab Trees and diverse herbivore population, including zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, and elephants. Kilimanjaro Airport to Moshi or Arusha
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro, you will be seamlessly transferred to your chosen hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Machame Camp
At an elevation of 9,927 feet (3,026 m), the journey covers 7 miles (11 km) and spans approximately 5 to 7 hours. Your adventure commences with a morning pick-up from your hotel in Moshi after a hearty breakfast. A one-hour drive will transport you to the Machame gate, the starting point of your trek. Embarking on this memorable journey, the initial leg involves a gradual ascent through lush, dense rainforest, leading you to the serene Machame Camp.
Shira Camp
At an elevation of 12,355 feet (3,766 m), covering a distance of 3 miles (5 km) over approximately 4 to 6 hours, the next leg of your journey unfolds. The day begins with a personal introduction to your dedicated trekking team. As the morning progresses, the landscape transforms, revealing zones of towering heather and expansive moorland, marking a stark contrast to the lush jungle of the previous day. If time permits, you may opt for a brief hike to the Shira Caves after reaching the camp, adding an extra layer of exploration to your experience.
Barranco Camp
Barafu High Camp
At an elevation of 15,239 feet (4,645 m) and covering a distance of 5 miles (9 km) in approximately 5 to 8 hours, this day presents a formidable challenge. The adventure kicks off with a demanding ascent up the steep Barranco wall, involving some scrambling that, while not technically difficult, adds an exciting element to the journey. Following the climb, you descend into the scenic Karanga Valley, where a well-deserved lunch break awaits. For those opting to add an extra day, Karanga Camp is the destination. Meanwhile, participants on the regular itinerary continue to Barafu Hut after lunch, having trekked for a total of 5 to 8 hours and ascended 650 meters. Positioned as the highest camp, Barafu Hut marks the starting point for the summit push, which commences at 11 pm as you prepare for the midnight ascent.
Uhuru Peak Altitude
At an impressive altitude of 5,895 meters (19,340 feet), the summit day involves a challenging journey covering 3 miles (5 km) on ascent and 7 miles (12 km) on descent, spanning a duration of 10 to 16 hours. The day commences at midnight, marking the final push to the summit. This leg of the trek is a cold and demanding six-hour hike up a steep slope, with numerous switchbacks along the trail. Although challenging, the route is manageable, leading to the summit rim just around sunrise. From there, a relatively level hike along the rim guides you to Uhuru Peak, the ultimate summit and the highest point in Africa.
Upon descent, the trail retraces its steps back to Barafu Hut for a brief rest and snacks before continuing the journey down to Mweka Camp at an altitude of 3,068 meters (10,065 feet). The extended duration of trekking on this day is designed to mitigate acclimatization issues and facilitate a swift return to a lower elevation, ensuring your well-being during the descent.
Mweka Camp to Moshi / Arusha
Embarking on the final leg of your Kilimanjaro adventure, the descent from Mweka campsite takes approximately 4 to 5 hours, winding through the lush forest. As you reach Mweka gate, you’ll have the opportunity to collect certificates commemorating your achievement and meet the awaiting vehicle. The journey concludes with a return to either Moshi or Arusha for the night.
