BARAFU CAMP – SUMMIT| GLACIERS
Trekking Time: 6-8 hours | Distance: 7 km | Altitude Gain: 1296 m
To avoid the intense midday sun, our summit bid commences around midnight. A steep ascent leads us to the Summit glaciers, where you’ll navigate scree for 5 to 6 hours, covering an impressive elevation gain over a short distance. Despite the challenging terrain, the panoramic views are nothing short of spectacular. By the time we reach Stella Point (5750 m), the first rays of the sun will be emerging, casting an ethereal glow on the landscape.
Surrounded by breathtaking ice cliffs within the crater, and with sweeping views extending to Mawenzi peak and beyond, the journey to the summit of Uhuru (5896 m) is an awe-inspiring achievement. The term “Uhuru” translates to freedom in Swahili, signifying the triumphant culmination of your ascent.
The descent begins by returning to Stella Point and then descending on a scree slope back to Barafu Camp for a well-deserved breakfast and rest. Following this, the journey continues down to Millennium Camp (3000 m), offering a welcome reprieve. Throughout the descent, relish fabulous views of the plains and Mawenzi peak.
