Witness the impressive variety of large mammals against the dramatic backdrop of the Rift escarpment’s striking cliffs. As the day unfolds, we make a brief journey to our accommodation in Karatu, concluding the day’s adventures.

Day 3

Serengeti National Park

Embark on a thrilling journey to Serengeti National Park, commencing with registration at Naabi gate around lunchtime. After a delicious meal, delve into the heart of the Serengeti, where vast plains punctuated by acacia trees and occasional kopjes await. Spend the afternoon engrossed in game viewing, with the chance to encounter large herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle during December, January, and February—the peak of the migration season.

The Serengeti is also home to a myriad of resident animals, including giraffe, buffalo, and elephant, as well as majestic predators like lion, cheetah, and leopard. Day 5

Safari Adventure to Ngorongoro Crater

Embark on an early morning game drive in Serengeti, capturing the magic of the wilderness before we set our sights on the Ngorongoro Area. Distinguished as a Conservation Area rather than a National Park, Ngorongoro is a unique space where both wildlife and the indigenous Masai people coexist harmoniously.

Descending into the crater, surrounded by natural walls, unveils a sanctuary for diverse wildlife, including lions, elephants, buffalo, rhino, and, if luck is on our side, the elusive leopard. The only notable absence is the giraffe, whose long legs are not suited for the crater’s steep sides.

In the late afternoon, we venture just outside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to Mto Wa Mbu, where our accommodation at Nsya Tented Camp awaits. Revel in the day’s encounters as you settle in for a comfortable evening surrounded by the beauty of Tanzania’s landscapes. (Ngorongoro Serena Hotel FB)

Cultural Exploration and Masai Village Tour

Commence the day with a hearty breakfast, followed by a brief stop at Mto wa Mbu Village for a cultural immersion experience. Embark on a visit to a Masai boma, gaining insights into the unique traditions and way of life of the Masai people.

Day 7

Miriakamba Hut Expedition (2,514 M)

Embark on the Mount Meru climb starting from Momella Gate (1,500 m) in the late morning. The trail leads through open grassland, offering glimpses of buffaloes and warthogs. As we ascend, the journey continues through montane forest, creating a steady climb. Enjoy lunch at or near the Fig Tree Arch, an impressive natural formation large enough to drive a car through.

After lunch, the route progresses through less dense forest, where a rich variety of birds and monkeys can be observed, with the black and white colobus monkeys being a particularly captivating sight. By mid-afternoon, catch the first close-up views of the towering cliffs and the Ash Cone. Reach Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m), nestled in a picturesque grassy glade, in time to bask in the last rays of the afternoon sun and relish beautiful views extending over the surrounding plains toward Kilimanjaro. [5-6 hours walking]

Day 8

Saddle Hut Ascent (3,570 M)

Embark on a shorter yet challenging day as we journey from Miriakamba Hut to the saddle below Little Meru. The trail is characterized by a steep and sustained climb through the enchanting, open, and lush montane forest. As we ascend, we traverse Elephant Ridge, offering a midway vantage point with excellent views of the summit ridge and the vast crater floor. Take a break here, where you may even spot elephants or other wildlife.

Continuing uphill through the majestic giant heather and moorland vegetation, we reach Saddle Hut (3,570 m), where a well-deserved lunch awaits. The afternoon provides an opportunity to rest and soak in the breathtaking views. For those with energy to spare, a short climb to the nearby summit of Little Meru (3,820 m) is an option, offering superb views just before sunset. [3-6 hours walking]

Day 9

Summit Conquest and Descent to Miriakamba

Commence your ascent early at around 2 a.m., climbing steeply to Rhino Point (3,800 m) before navigating an undulating ridge of ash and rock to reach Cobra Point (4,350 m) as the sun paints the sky with its hues. The panoramic views include the majestic cliffs of the Crater rim, the Ash Cone rising from the Crater floor, Kilimanjaro seemingly floating on morning clouds, and a westward gaze toward the Rift Valley if weather conditions permit.

The final push to Socialist Peak (4,566 m) takes about an hour, leading you along a superb but often steep path. The return journey to Rhino Point, bathed in the sharp morning light, traverses a narrow ridge between the sloping outer wall of the crater and the sheer cliffs of the inner wall—a truly dramatic and exhilarating walk.

Rest and enjoy brunch at Saddle Hut before commencing the descent to Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m). Note that the ridge between the summit and Rhino Point may not be suitable for those with vertigo. In icy conditions or strong winds, progressing beyond Rhino Point may be challenging or impossible. [10-12 hours walking]

Day 9

Descent to Momella Gate and Journey Conclusion

Embark on the direct descent towards Momella, traversing open grassland and mixed forest with promising opportunities to spot wildlife along the way. Revel in excellent views back toward the crater and over the plains of the National Park as you descend. Anticipate reaching Momella Gate by late morning.

Following your descent, transfer back to Ilboru Safari Lodge in Arusha, marking the conclusion of your remarkable journey. Reflect on the awe-inspiring experiences and memories created during your Mount Meru trekking adventure. (2-3 hours walking)
